Renewable Energy
SMW recognizes that a clean energy future rests on smart policy and legal decisions made today. The firm’s attorneys are at the leading edge of critical policy decisions to promote distributed generation, energy storage, electric vehicles, demand response programs, and energy efficiency. Bringing deep expertise and experience to the table, the firm represents clients in regulatory proceedings before state public utility commissions around the country and other state and federal regulatory bodies. The firm’s regulatory work encompasses:
- Interconnection and renewable energy integration policies
- Community and shared renewable energy
- Renewable energy procurement program formation
- Distribution system planning and grid modernization
- Integrated resource planning
- Utility rate cases and the allocation of costs between different classes of customers
The firm also drafts and reviews renewable energy agreements, including power purchase agreements, interconnection agreements, leases, and easements; and advises on renewable energy permitting and project development.
Siting Proceedings
SMW understands that where energy is generated can be just as important as how it’s produced. The firm represents environmental groups and local and tribal governments in siting proceedings before the California Energy Commission and California Public Utilities Commission, working to ensure that environmental and cultural impacts of facilities are addressed. The firm also helps clients oppose poorly sited natural gas power and transmission projects.
