In our solid waste law practice, we help clients maximize recycling opportunities and promote responsible solid waste management. We offer expertise in solid waste laws and regulations and extensive practical experience in the field. Public agency clients rely on us to help them meet state and local landfill diversion mandates through development and implementation of ordinances, programs and policies. We assist in the negotiation, drafting, monitoring and enforcement of waste collection and disposal agreements. Community group clients also benefit from our solid waste background. Examples of our work in this field:
- Alameda County Waste Management Authority: As general counsel to this dynamic joint powers agency, we helped develop and implement cutting-edge waste diversion and reduction programs ranging from construction and demolition debris recycling to food waste composting.
- Landfill Expansion Challenges: The firm represented environmental and municipal clients in challenging the expansion of landfills, including the Altamont Landfill and West Marin Sanitary Landfill.
- Landfill Closure and Reuse: The firm assisted the cities of Mountain View and Berkeley with permitting associated with landfill closure and reuse for park, trails and open space, and for Shoreline Amphitheatre.
- Model Recycling Ordinance: SMW developed a model construction debris recycling ordinance that has been adopted by several cities.
